Los Angeles Homes is a platform all about the Architecture and the Design in Los Angeles. But we know that some of our celebrities own some luxury penthouses in some of the best hotels in the area. Let’s take a look of some of the Best Design Hotels in California.

From seaside retreats to stylish urban haunts, there’s one thing these hotels, inns and resorts have in common: they embrace great design.

Viceroy Santa Monica

Kelly Wearstler’s rococo touch made this hotel an overnight star when it opened in 2002, and its design still looks as fresh as the day it opened. Emerald, white and black lacquer, mirror-upon-marble-upon-mirror, and updated retro touches—a foo dog lamp here, a chinoiserie table there—feel deliciously, indulgently over the top.

Auberge du Soleil

A Napa icon, Auberge du Soleil corners the market on romance with a sylvan hillside property tucked into an olive grove. French doors open onto sunny terraces, fireplaces glow in rooms renovated in 2005 to resemble a Cote d’Azur hideaway. And the hotel recently treated its Michelin-starred restaurant to a new look—persimmon linens, boho objets d’art, petrified wood and pewter—in honor of its 30th anniversary.

Mojave Sands

The new Mojave Sands is like the sophisticated older soul sister to the Ace Palm Springs. Refurbed over a decade by furniture designer Blake Simpson, the resulting Joshua Tree hotel takes a more organic approach to the retro refurb formula with cedar and stone, gravel and succulents bringing the desert landscape in. Rooms all have private patios with gurgling fountains outside and a well-edited selection of fun vintage objects inside, including old record players. By fall, the entire property will be run on solar power.

SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills

The SLS is LA excess at its best, no surprise given the team behind it—nightlife wunderkind Sam Nazarian, design godfather Philippe Starck, and star chef Jose Andres. The resulting $230 million project exploded onto the scene in 2009 with an Alice in Wonderland pool deck of giant-sized planters and mismatched life-sized frames (all the better to line up that paparazzi shot). The dark whimsy of the common spaces—acrylic taxidermy and rococo mismatched chairs—contrasts with the clean lines of the futuristic rooms, all chrome and leather, mirror and fur.

Bardessono

Bardessono_best-design-hotels-in-california Best Design Hotels in California Best Design Hotels in California Bardessono best design hotels in california

Placid pools reflecting geometric rock sculptures, a wall of fire, a stone path curving shell like outwards, walls alive with plants. This is a modern hotel that knows how to engage the elements. It also knows how to protect them with solar panels, ecofriendly taipa or rammed earth walls, reclaimed wood flooring, organic linens and non-toxic cleaning supplies. But there’s not a hint of crunchiness to Bardessono. The high-ceiled rooms with their neutral cream on sand on slate color schemes feel more loft than commune. But complimentary wine tastings, yoga classes and the rooftop pool scene certainly encourage communing with the locals.
